A Brief History of Troy Style Darboards
Troy Style Darts is a unique and deeply rooted variation of American darts that traces its origins to Troy, New York. Popular throughout the Capital Region, this localized game of darts has maintained a loyal following for generations. Known for its distinctive gameplay and craftsmanship, Troy Style Darts became a staple in fraternal societies, lodges, bars, and even home garages across the area.
The game traditionally played on these boards is called Baseball, a nine-inning dart game where accuracy and consistency are key. Players stand 7 feet 3 inches from the board and aim at a cork center—or “bird”—which hangs 5 feet 3 inches from the floor. The game requires the use of high-quality, handmade three-feathered darts, known for their precision and balance, a defining feature of the style.
Historically, four major board makers helped define and preserve Troy Style Darts:
James Toohey – Among the earliest known makers, Toohey crafted dartboards by hand, setting the original standards for quality and layout that influenced later builders.
Al’s Famous American Dartboards – A major name in the mid-20th century, Al’s boards became iconic in local leagues and bars, known for their durable build and its inclusion of the outside cork.
Jim Koval – Carrying on the tradition, Koval brought further refinement to board construction, maintaining the hand-crafted integrity and continuing to supply dartboards to an avid local base.
Victor Gwozdz – The most recent craftsman to carry the torch, Gwozdz is known for his meticulous attention to detail and dedication to preserving the authenticity of Troy Style boards in a modern age. At a time when traditional board makers were no longer producing, Mohawk Dartboards played a crucial role in keeping the game alive, stepping in to manufacture boards when few others were, ensuring that local players could continue the tradition uninterrupted.
Troy Style Darts remains a beloved tradition in upstate New York, particularly in the Capital Region. Though technology and trends have evolved, the game’s roots remain strong, with enthusiasts continuing to honor its legacy through regular play, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for the local culture it represents.
